In short: Bert Mizusawa is one of the few individuals to hold flag rank in the military while also serving in both the legislative and executive branches of the U.S. government. From leading a historic firefight at the Korean DMZ to advising presidential campaigns, his path defies conventional career trajectories.

Born in Honolulu in 1957, Bert Kameaaloha Mizusawa spent his youth in diverse locations including Japan, Germany, and the Netherlands before his family settled in Virginia. His academic and military journey began in earnest at the United States Military Academy, where he graduated first in his class in 1979. This early success set the tone for a career defined by high-stakes responsibility, ranging from commanding the Joint Security Force in Korea to navigating the complexities of Wall Street law.

Mizusawa's military service is marked by a notable act of valor. In November 1984, while commanding a company at Panmunjom, he led his troops during a firefight against North Korean forces who were pursuing a Soviet defector. His actions earned him the Silver Star, as he personally guided the defector to safety while under fire. Later in his career, he transitioned into leadership roles within the Army Reserve, including commanding the Army Reserve Information Operations Command and serving as a major general.

Beyond the battlefield, Mizusawa has cultivated a multifaceted professional life. He earned a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School and worked as an attorney at Sullivan & Cromwell, where he managed massive debt offerings. His public service includes time as a professional staff member for the Senate Committee on Armed Services and as a Senior Executive at the Pentagon. In recent years, he has remained active in national security policy, including a role as a senior adviser at the Central Intelligence Agency and as a foreign policy contributor for the 2016 Trump campaign.

Currently, Mizusawa is pursuing a seat in the United States Senate, representing the Republican party in the 2026 Virginia election. His career remains a study in the intersection of military strategy, legal expertise, and political influence, reflecting a lifetime spent moving between the most sensitive corridors of power and the front lines of international security.
