In short: Founded in Mahabad, the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan has spent decades fighting for autonomy within Iran. From its origins as a short-lived republic to its current status as a militant leftist organization in exile, the party remains a central, controversial actor in the complex landscape of Iranian Kurdish politics.

The Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI) was established on 16 August 1945 by Qazi Muhammad in Mahabad, Iran. This founding was a reaction to state policies that discriminated against non-Persian and non-Shiite communities. By January 1946, the Republic of Kurdistan was declared with Muhammad as president. However, the state was short-lived; following the withdrawal of Soviet forces, the Imperial Iranian Army conquered the territory on 15 December 1946. The subsequent execution of Qazi Muhammad and other leaders nearly destroyed the organization, forcing it into a long recovery process.

Throughout the 20th century, the party shifted its strategic goals from seeking a fully independent nation-state to advocating for autonomy or a federal system within Iran. This evolution was marked by internal fractures and external pressures. In 1955, a party conference solidified its independence from the Tudeh Party and adopted the name PDKI. Later, the party faced severe repression, including the 1989 assassination of leader Abdulrahman Ghassemlou in Vienna and the 1992 murder of party leaders at the Mykonos restaurant in Berlin. These events led to international legal consequences, with German courts issuing an arrest warrant for the Iranian intelligence minister.

In the modern era, the PDKI has continued its armed struggle, often operating from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The party has faced significant military retaliation, including a 2018 missile attack on its headquarters in Koya that killed 18 members. Despite these setbacks, the PDKI remains active, supporting widespread protests against the Iranian regime and forming the Coalition of Political Forces of Iranian Kurdistan in 2026. While some scholars classify the group's military wing, the Peshmerga, as 'compliant rebels' due to their stated commitment to international human rights standards, the party remains banned and designated as a terrorist organization by the Iranian government.
