A new alliance aims to dismantle the Islamic Republic of Iran
In short: In February 2026, a coalition of major Iranian Kurdish parties formed with a radical mandate: overthrowing the current regime. This shift from mere political dialogue to joint military coordination marks a significant escalation in the struggle for Kurdish self-determination and a broader push for democratic change across Iran.
The Coalition of Political Forces of Iranian Kurdistan (CPFIK) was officially established on February 22, 2026. It emerged from years of preliminary cooperation, specifically building on the work of a dedicated dialogue center founded in 2023 following the Jina Mahsa Amini protests. While earlier groups focused on joint political interests, this new alliance explicitly declared its willingness to overthrow the Islamic Republic, seeking both Kurdish self-determination and a democratized, secular Iran.
The coalition's structure is unique because it integrates diverse military capabilities. It established a joint command center for 'Peshmerga' forces—representing parties like KDPI, PAK, Khabat, and Komala—alongside guerrilla units from PJAK. These groups, which Sky News estimated to have between 5,000 and 10,000 fighters, include many battle-hardened veterans of the war against the Islamic State. The alliance also created a joint diplomatic committee to manage external relations and a management structure to oversee liberated areas.
The formation has faced significant friction. While it received support from various Kurdish and international entities, it was met with hostility from figures like Reza Pahlavi, who accused the group of separatism. Furthermore, the coalition's goals are contested internally; for example, the Komala Party initially hesitated to sign the founding agreement due to vague objectives before joining on March 4, 2026. Despite these tensions, the alliance maintains a unified front on key pillars: secularization, democratic elections in Eastern Kurdistan, and opposition to internal violence.
Geopolitically, the coalition's rise has triggered immediate security responses. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has intensified border security and targeted member parties based in Iraq. While reports suggested potential U.S.-backed offensives in early 2026, regional pressure reportedly halted such actions. Nevertheless, the alliance continues to coordinate political and military moves, with some members claiming their forces are already positioned deep inside Iran or along the border.
