How a single amnesiac wanderer rewrites the history of ancient China
In short: The Dynasty Warriors series has long relied on the established legends of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. But a new installment breaks tradition, placing an original protagonist at the center of a branching alternate history that allows players to fundamentally alter the fate of legendary warlords.
Released on January 17, 2025, Dynasty Warriors: Origins represents a significant pivot for developer Omega Force. After a seven-year hiatus from non-mobile titles, the studio abandoned plans for a traditional 'Dynasty Warriors 10' to focus on this reinvention. Producer Tomohiko Sho noted that the shift was necessary to combat player fatigue with the established formula.
The game introduces Ziluan, an amnesiac wanderer tasked with finding a hero to unite China. Through Ziluan, players can directly intervene in historical milestones, such as defeating the Yellow Turban leader Zhang Jiao or assisting Wang Yun in the plot against Dong Zhuo. The narrative structure is highly reactive; players choose to seek out Liu Bei, Cao Cao, or Sun Jian. This choice dictates which faction Ziluan joins and which battles are fought. Furthermore, a branching system allows players to either follow the classic historical trajectory up to the Battle of Red Cliffs or complete difficult objectives to avert the deaths of historical figures, creating a more favorable era for their chosen side.
While critics at OpenCritic gave the game an 85% recommendation rate, and CGMagazine hailed it as a franchise overhaul, the reception was not universal. VideoGamer offered a more tempered view, suggesting the experience lacked depth. Despite these debates, the game achieved significant commercial success, reaching 1 million units sold worldwide by February 2025. The technical ambition was high, with Omega Force aiming to display 10,000 soldiers on screen simultaneously, utilizing the power of the PlayStation 5 hardware.
