In short: History often hinges on a single moment of surrender. In 1865, the site of a major North Carolina city became the stage for the final collapse of Confederate forces, transforming a tobacco-growing region into a cornerstone of modern American research and technology.

On April 26, 1865, Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston surrendered to Union General William Tecumseh Sherman in Durham. This pivotal event effectively ended the American Civil War. Before this transition into a manufacturing powerhouse, the area was a rural landscape where free African-American families, such as the Jeffries, Weaver, and Locklear families, had begun settling following the American Revolution. The county was officially established on April 17, 1881, from portions of Wake and Orange counties. In 1911, additional land from Wake County was incorporated into the area to form Carr Township.

The region's industrial identity was forged in the post-war era. While Robert Morris pioneered the tobacco industry in 1858 and John R. Green created the famous Bull Durham blend, the Duke family became the dominant force after opening a factory in 1874. This industrial foundation eventually shifted toward high technology, medicine, and education through the philanthropy of James Buchanan Duke, who established Duke University in 1924. The city was first incorporated in 1866, though its original charter was later invalidated by Congress. Durham also became a significant center for textile production during its industrial rise.

Today, the county serves as the core of the Research Triangle, a major urban area including Raleigh and Chapel Hill. It hosts Research Triangle Park, the largest research park in the United States, which covers 11 square miles. The area has evolved from a tobacco and textile hub into a national leader in health-related activities and precision equipment manufacturing. The county currently maintains a population of 324,833, with 94.9% of residents living in urban environments. It also houses North Carolina Central University and Durham Technical Community College.
