In short: Eastern Washington University began as a private dream funded by a railroad industrialist. Over 140 years, it survived devastating fires and political vetoes to become a regional polytechnic. Its journey reflects a shift from basic teacher training to a modern, hands-on approach to higher education.

Originating in 1882, the school welcomed upwards of 200 pupils. Benjamin P. Cheney Academy first admitted more than 200 learners. This was made possible by a donation from Benjamin P. Cheney, a wealthy transportation industrialist and member of the Northern Pacific Railroad board. At the time, the school was a private entity struggling to compete with the local public school district. The city of Cheney itself was surveyed in 1880 along the railroad tracks, and renamed in honor of the donor by October 1880. The school's identity shifted significantly in 1889, the same year Washington became a state. It evolved into the State Normal School at Cheney, specifically established to train both men and women in the art of teaching. However, the early years were marked by physical and financial instability.

The campus was nearly destroyed by fire twice—once in 1891 and again in 1912. Furthermore, the school faced a major crisis in 1897 when a gubernatorial veto forced it to cancel classes for a full year, a gap only bridged by local funding. Following World War II, the campus underwent rapid expansion to meet a changing global demand for professionals. It became Eastern Washington College of Education in 1937 and eventually Eastern Washington State College in 1961. In 1977, the Washington State Legislature officially renamed it Eastern Washington University. Most recently, in 2024, the university transitioned to its current identity as the Region’s Polytechnic, emphasizing applied learning and career-ready skills while maintaining its foundation in the liberal arts.
