In short: Founded in 1910 to meet the demand for educators in northwestern Ohio, Bowling Green State University evolved from a modest normal school into a comprehensive research institution. Surviving the Great Depression and wartime enrollment shifts, it now anchors a sprawling campus defined by academic innovation and a unique cultural legacy.

Bowling Green State University (BGSU) began as a response to a regional need for teacher training. In 1910, the Ohio General Assembly authorized a commission to select sites for two new normal schools. Bowling Green was chosen over Van Wert in a 3–2 vote, largely due to its central location, existing transportation infrastructure, and the town's 'dry' status. The school opened in 1914 with 304 students and 21 faculty members, operating out of temporary locations before moving into its first permanent buildings, University Hall and Williams Hall, in 1915.

The university's survival was not always guaranteed. In 1933, during the Great Depression, the Ohio State Senate Welfare Commission proposed converting the school into a mental health institution. A coordinated effort by students, faculty, and the local community successfully defeated the measure by a 14–5 vote. Following this, the institution gained university status in 1935. The mid-20th century brought further expansion, including the establishment of the Graduate School in 1948 and the creation of specialized colleges, such as the College of Musical Arts in 1975 and the College of Health and Human Services in 1973.

Today, BGSU is classified as an R2 doctoral university with high research activity. Its 1,338-acre campus features over 116 buildings, ranging from historic structures built in the early 1900s to modern, sustainable facilities like The Oaks dining hall, which utilizes hybrid solar and wind power. The university also maintains a strong focus on the arts, housing one of the few glassblowing degree programs in the country and the Wolfe Center for the Arts. Despite its growth, the university remains deeply connected to its regional roots, with approximately 85% of its student body hailing from Ohio.
