The colors of Sudan's flag are a map of its revolutionary history
In short: Sudan's current flag is more than a tricolor; it is a visual archive of rebellion, colonial resistance, and religious identity. From the black banners of 19th-century warriors to the pan-Arab colors of modern revolutions, every stripe tells a story of a nation seeking its own definition.
The current flag of Sudan, adopted on May 20, 1970, is deeply rooted in the Pan-Arab colors: red, white, black, and green. These colors have been historically linked to Arab unity and Islamic religion for centuries. Specifically, the red stripe symbolizes the country's struggle for independence and the sacrifices of its martyrs. The white stripe represents the people, light, and optimism, while also honoring the White Flag League, a nationalist group that rose against colonial rule in 1924. The black stripe is a direct reference to the 'land of the black people' (the literal meaning of Sudan) and the black flags used by nationalists during the Mahdist Revolution in the late 19th century. Finally, green represents Islam, agriculture, and the land's prosperity.
The evolution of Sudan's national identity is visible in its discarded flags. From 1899 to 1956, the country was an Anglo-Egyptian condominium and lacked a unique flag, often flying the British and Egyptian flags together. Upon independence on January 1, 1956, Sudan adopted a blue-yellow-green tricolour designed by poet Macki Sufi. These colors were chosen for their neutrality, representing the River Nile (blue), the Sahara (yellow), and the farmlands (green). This flag remained in use until a 1969 military coup by Gaafar Nimeiry.
The transition to the current design followed a competition after the 1969 coup. The winning entry by artist Abdel Rahman Ahmed Al-Jali was based on the Arab Liberation Flag of the 1952 Egyptian Revolution. This design replaced the neutral landscape colors with a tricolor of red, white, and black, featuring a green triangle at the hoist. Interestingly, the blue-yellow-green flag resurfaced during the 2018–19 protests, and its readoption has been proposed as recently as December 2025 amidst the ongoing civil war.
