In short: Before the era of modern gunpowder, the French gendarme was the ultimate symbol of aristocratic power. These noble heavy cavalrymen were the heirs to medieval knights, blending high-society prestige with devastating battlefield shock. Yet, their dominance eventually collapsed against the rising tide of pike and shot formations.

The gendarme emerged as a solution to the instability of medieval warfare. By the 15th century, the traditional feudal levy—where knights served only 40 days a year—was inadequate for long campaigns. To solve this, French kings issued 'ordonnances' starting in 1439. These decrees established standing armies of permanent units. The gendarmes d'ordonnance were the elite of these forces: noble heavy cavalrymen who signed contracts for year-long service, providing the crown with a reliable, professional regular force.

Organizationally, a gendarme company was a complex social and military structure. Each company typically consisted of 100 'lances fournies.' A single lance was not just one man, but a unit of six: a noble heavy armored horseman (the gendarme), a lightly armed 'coutillier,' a non-combatant page, and three mounted archers. These archers eventually transitioned to fighting on horseback as a lighter cavalry variant. The system was built on patronage; the king appointed magnates to lead companies, effectively buying the loyalty of the nobility by providing them with prestige, income, and positions of power.

Despite their reputation, the gendarme faced a technological crossroads in the 16th century. While they remained the world's most respected heavy cavalry, they were increasingly forced to operate in 'combined arms' teams alongside artillery and infantry to counter the deadly 'pike and shot' formations. Their symbolic demise occurred at the Battle of Pavia, where they suffered a disastrous defeat. This loss signaled the end of the knightly era and the rise of the Spanish Tercios as Europe's dominant military force.
