In short: Formed by brothers Isaac, Taylor, and Zac in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Hanson exploded onto the global stage in 1997 with their hit MMMBop. While many dismissed them as a novelty, the trio navigated label disputes and industry shifts to build a lasting career as independent artists, eventually performing with world-class symphony orchestras.

The band began as a professional group in 1992, performing at the Mayfest Arts Festival in Tulsa. By 1997, their debut major-label album, Middle of Nowhere, became a worldwide phenomenon, selling 10 million copies. The success of the single MMMBop earned the brothers three Grammy nominations in 1998. However, their relationship with Mercury Records and its successor, Island Def Jam, eventually soured. Executives rejected over 80 of the band's songs, claiming they lacked marketability, a struggle documented in the film Strong Enough to Break.

Seeking creative control, the brothers departed the major label system to establish their own independent label, 3CG Records. This transition allowed them to pursue diverse projects, including the 2018 symphonic album String Theory, which featured arrangements by Academy Award-winning composer David Campbell. The band's commitment to independence has been consistent; they have self-released successful albums like 2004's Underneath, which debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Top Independent Albums chart, and the 2022 project RGB, where each brother produced a distinct section of the record.

Beyond their studio work, the band has maintained a dedicated fan base through extensive touring and philanthropic efforts. Their Take the Walk campaign, launched alongside the 2007 album The Walk, encouraged fans to walk one mile to raise awareness for AIDS and poverty in Africa. Despite facing challenges—ranging from a 2010 riot at a New York City concert to a 2019 motorcycle accident involving Zac—the band has continued to release music and tour globally. Today, they remain active, balancing their long-standing career with family commitments and a continued focus on artistic autonomy.
