How a discarded background track became a global pop phenomenon in 1997
In short: Originally a slow, forgotten background part for an independent album, MMMBop was transformed by the Dust Brothers into an upbeat, chart-topping anthem. The song became a worldwide sensation, reaching number one in at least 12 countries and earning critical acclaim as a perfect, candy-coated pop confection.
Written and performed by the Tulsa-based brothers Isaac, Taylor, and Zac Hanson, the song was released on March 24, 1997. While the band was initially known for their independent work, the hit version of MMMBop was reworked with a faster tempo and produced by the Dust Brothers. Zac Hanson later explained that the track was never intended to be a lead single; it originated as a background element for a different song during the production of their first independent album in 1996.
The song's success was rapid and widespread. By May 24, 1997, it reached the top of the US Billboard Hot 100, where it remained for three weeks. Critics were divided but largely captivated, comparing the brothers to the Jackson 5 or 1960s vocal groups like The Beach Boys. While some reviewers praised its catchy, indelible hooks, others noted its nonsensical nature, with Rolling Stone’s Chuck Eddy famously comparing its persistence in the listener's brain to chewing gum stuck in a shag carpet.
The legacy of the song has proven remarkably durable. By March 2016, an estimated 93,000 cover versions had appeared on YouTube, though the band members have noted that many performers struggle to correctly syncopate the chorus. The song’s cultural footprint continues to evolve, with a 2023 collaboration titled MMMBop 2.0 featuring the English pop-punk band Busted. Despite the passage of decades, it remains a staple of pop discourse, frequently appearing on lists of the greatest songs of the 1990s and beyond.
