In short: In high-intensity combat, a jammed or overheated barrel can be a death sentence. The Heckler & Koch MG4 solves this with a hammer-forged quick-change system that allows soldiers to replace the barrel without protective gloves, even while it is still glowing from use.

Developed in the late 1990s and first unveiled in September 2001, the MG4 was engineered as a light machine gun for the German Bundeswehr. It was specifically designed to replace the older 7.62 mm MG3 at the squad support level while remaining compatible with various ammunition types without requiring gas system adjustments. Its design philosophy prioritizes reliability under adverse conditions and user safety through mechanical locks that prevent accidental firing if the bolt is not fully pulled back.

The weapon features a unique barrel assembly weighing 1.80 kg (3.97 lb) that serves as its own carrying handle. This allows for rapid changes during sustained fire. To maintain consistency, the front sights are mechanically adjustable to account for zero shifts between different barrels. Furthermore, the MG4 is designed for versatility; it can be carried with a folding buttstock that remains fully operable when folded, or mounted on standard American M122A1 tripods for increased stability.

While it shares conceptual similarities with the Belgian Minimi, the MG4 has distinct engineering choices, such as its stamped sheet metal receiver and an enhanced pawl mechanism to feed disintegrating M27 ammunition belts. It has seen significant international adoption since 2005, including use by the Spanish Army (which ordered 1,800–2,000 units in 2007), Malaysia's special operations forces, and various other nations like Albania, Chile, and Portugal.

The platform has also branched into specialized roles. A vehicle variant lacks a buttstock and bipod for use as secondary armament on the Puma infantry fighting vehicle, while an export variant (MG4E) features a modified gas assembly to reduce the cyclic rate of fire.
