In short: As birth rates decline, the Republic of Singapore Navy faces a critical manpower shortage. Their solution is a fleet of highly automated ships designed to do more with far fewer sailors, using modular technology and unmanned systems to maintain maritime security.

The Independence-class littoral mission vessel (LMV) represents a strategic shift in naval architecture, driven by the demographic challenges facing the Singapore Armed Forces. To combat the pressures of a reduced manning pool, the design of these eight surface platforms focuses on extreme efficiency. Engineers successfully reduced the required crew from 30 personnel to just 23 by implementing higher levels of automation and remote monitoring capabilities.

Central to this efficiency is the Integrated Command Centre, which merges the ship's bridge, machinery control, and combat information centre into a single space. The vessels are also built for versatility, utilizing containerized mission packages that allow the ships to be dynamically reconfigured for tasks ranging from humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to low-intensity conflict. This modularity is complemented by hardware like twin stern slipways from Palfinger Marine, designed for the launch and recovery of Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats.

The fleet's capabilities continue to evolve through modern technological integration. In 2025, the navy began deploying the Veloce 60 Unmanned Aerial System, which provides up to 14 hours of endurance for enhanced surveillance. To defend against the rising threat of unmanned aerial systems, the navy is also upgrading certain vessels with the Strales 76mm Guided Gun to improve cost-effective defense against fast-moving targets. As of March 2026, this upgrade has been identified on the RSS Justice and RSS Independence.
