The undeclared war that redefined the Horn of Africa and birthed a colony
Between 1887 and 1889, the Kingdom of Italy and the Ethiopian Empire clashed in a complex, undeclared conflict. Caught between Italian colonial expansion and a devastating Mahdist uprising in the west, Emperor Yohannes IV faced a two-front struggle that ultimately reshaped the region's borders and led to the birth of Eritrea.
The conflict began in January 1887, sparked by Italian encroachment into the Ethiopian hinterland near Massawa. Tensions exploded at the Battle of Dogali, where an Ethiopian force under Ras Alula ambushed and nearly annihilated an Italian battalion. Despite this significant victory, Alula was reprimanded by Emperor Yohannes IV for acting without imperial permission. The Italian response was swift, with the parliament voting millions of lire to reinforce their positions, though disease and logistical challenges soon forced a temporary withdrawal.
The war was defined by shifting internal alliances within Ethiopia. As Yohannes IV struggled to maintain control against powerful vassals, King Menelik of Shewa navigated a delicate path, signing a secret neutrality treaty with Italian diplomat Pietro Antonelli in October 1887 to secure modern weaponry. This internal instability was compounded by the Mahdist uprising in Sudan, which forced Yohannes to prioritize the western frontier over the Italian threat. In March 1889, the Emperor was killed at the Battle of Gallabat while fighting the Mahdists, creating a power vacuum.
Following the death of Yohannes, Menelik claimed the imperial throne and signed the Treaty of Wuchale in May 1889. This agreement formalized Italian control over territories in the Mareb Melash region, which Italy subsequently organized into the colony of Eritrea in 1890. While some historians view this period as a distinct conflict, others group it with the later 1895–1896 war, reflecting the ongoing nature of Italian colonial ambitions and the complex, often contested, territorial claims that defined the late 19th-century Horn of Africa.
