In short: Major General John Sedgwick was a beloved commander known as Uncle John. During the American Civil War, he famously dismissed the danger of distant Confederate sharpshooters at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. Seconds later, a single shot proved his assessment tragically wrong, marking the end of his career.

John Sedgwick was a career military officer who rose to lead the VI Corps of the Army of the Potomac. Born in Connecticut in 1813, he graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1837 and served in the Seminole, Mexican–American, and Indian Wars. By the time the American Civil War began, he was an experienced soldier, though his path to command was marked by both physical injury and political friction. He was wounded three times at the Battle of Antietam and suffered from cholera early in the war, which kept him from the First Battle of Bull Run.

By 1864, Sedgwick faced potential reassignment due to his vocal admiration for George B. McClellan and his lack of enthusiasm for the Radical Republican agenda. Despite these tensions, he remained in command of the VI Corps during the Overland Campaign. He chided them, famously remarking that the enemy could not hit an elephant at such a range. Moments later, a Whitworth rifle bullet struck him under the left eye, killing him instantly.

Sedgwick’s death was a significant blow to the Union leadership. Ulysses S. Grant, who considered him a dependable officer, reportedly remarked that losing Sedgwick was more damaging than the loss of an entire division. While he was the most senior major general killed during the conflict by date of rank, his legacy persisted through his nickname, Uncle John, and numerous monuments, including an equestrian statue at Gettysburg and a West Point memorial that students believe brings good luck on exams.
