In short: Jorge Mas Canosa was more than a lobbyist; he was a financier of revolution and a titan of industry. From CIA training for the Bay of Pigs to building a multi-billion dollar infrastructure company, his life sat at the volatile intersection of covert warfare, high finance, and political influence.

Born in Santiago de Cuba in 1939, Mas Canosa fled to the United States in 1960 after being implicated in anti-government activities by the Castro regime. Army. His early involvement was characterized by militant activism; he worked with groups like RECE and CORU, which were involved in raising funds for weapons and researching Caribbean bases for attacks on Cuba.

Mas Canosa successfully pivoted from militant activism to industrial success. In 1971, he acquired a struggling construction firm, renaming it Church & Tower. By optimizing construction methods and leveraging his reputation in the exile community, he grew the company into a telecommunications empire. This foundation eventually became MasTec, Inc., which by 2015 had reached $4.2 billion in annual revenue. Despite his corporate success, Mas Canosa remained deeply embedded in politics, founding the Cuban American National Foundation (CANF) in 1981 to shift anti-Castro strategy from militant action toward political lobbying.

His influence was profound but controversial. He is credited with helping design key U.S. legislation like the Helms-Burton Act, yet he faced intense scrutiny over his ties to figures like Luis Posada Carriles. Records indicate Mas Canosa provided financial support for Carriles’s escape from a Venezuelan prison and paid for demolition operations in Mexico. While he was a powerful 'caudillo' of the Cuban-American community who served as an advisor to President Reagan, his legacy remains tied to both massive infrastructure development and high-stakes covert operations.
