A kingdom born from the ashes of a broken monarchy
In short: In 1478, the Kingdom of Georgia fractured into a patchwork of warring states. From this chaos emerged Kartli, a kingdom that spent centuries navigating a precarious existence as a vassal to two of history's greatest empires, balancing cultural preservation with the brutal demands of survival.
The disintegration of the unified Georgian monarchy began in earnest around 1450 due to intense competition between feudal factions within the royal house and nobility. A pivotal moment occurred in 1463 at the Battle of Chikhori, where the defeat of George VIII by the nobleman Bagrat shattered national unity. Bagrat proclaimed himself King of Imereti, triggering a wholesale devolution of power that transformed the region into a collection of petty kingdoms and principalities. Throughout the late medieval and early modern periods, Kartli functioned as a strategic buffer and vassal state. It was subject to the successive dynasties of Iran and, for a shorter period, the Ottoman Empire. The Peace of Amasya in 1555 formally recognized Kartli and neighboring Kakheti as Persian possessions.
During this era, the kingdom often paid tribute in the form of horses, wine, and human captives—boys and girls sent as slaves—to maintain a fragile sovereignty. The 17th century introduced a unique cultural synthesis under Rostom Khan, who was appointed king in 1632. Having converted to Islam, Rostom imported Persian language and culture into the Kartlian administration while simultaneously practicing religious tolerance by subsidizing church repairs. This period of prosperity and trade eventually gave way to a push for independence. Following the 1747 assassination of Nader Shah, leaders like Teimuraz II and Heraclius II declared de facto independence, leading to the brief unification of Kartli and Kakheti in 1762 before the Russian Empire annexed the territory in 1800.
