The farmer's son who became a legendary commander of the Shinsengumi
In short: Born Miyagawa Katsugorō to a farming family, this swordsman rose from a provincial dojo to lead one of Japan's most famous paramilitary police units. His life, marked by sudden shifts in status and a violent end, remains a cornerstone of Japanese historical legend and modern fiction.
Kondō Isami's journey from a commoner to a samurai-class commander is a remarkable tale of meritocracy within the late Edo period. Originally born in Musashi Province, he began his martial training at the Shieikan do/jo in 1848. His talent and reputation for defending his family home caught the attention of the Tennen Rishin-ryū master, Kondō Shūsuke, who adopted him in 1849. By 1861, Isami had ascended to become the fourth-generation master of the school.
His leadership of the Shinsengumi emerged from the shifting political landscape of the 1860s. Following the disbandment of the Rōshigumi, Isami and his close associate Hijikata Toshizō remained in Kyoto to form the Mibu Rōshigumi, acting as police under the supervision of Matsudaira Katamori. The unit gained widespread notoriety following the Ikedaya Affair in July 1864, where they arrested a cell of anti-shogunate rebels known as shishi.
The end of the Tokugawa era brought Isami's downfall. After fighting in the Battle of Toba–Fushimi in January 1868, he attempted to lead a new unit, the Kōyō Chinbutai, under the alias Okubo Tsuyoshi. However, Imperial forces caught him by surprise in April 1868. Following a trial, he was executed by beheading on May 17, 1868. While some historical accounts, such as those from Tani Tateki, accused him of assassinating Sakamoto Ryōma, others have contested this, noting that a different individual confessed to the crime in 1870.
