The fortress that served as a gateway against imperial expansion
In short: For centuries, this rugged landscape functioned as a vital defensive shield for southern India. Its hills were not merely scenery but strategic barriers designed to repel imperial invaders seeking territory and wealth. This region served as the primary gateway of Tamil Nadu, protecting against various historical onslaughts.
Historically situated in the ancient Kongu Nadu and Chera country, Krishnagiri served as a vital protective barrier for the southern region of India. It functioned as a "Gateway of Tamil Nadu," specifically engineered to defend against onslaughts from various invaders driven by motives of imperialism and exploitation.
The primary defensive structure was the majestic fortress built on the Krishnagiri hill by the Vijaya Nagar emperors. This site became the first and foremost defensive place in the area, standing as a lasting testimony to the region's military significance. The strategic importance of the location is further evidenced by its history of being ruled by successive powers including the Cholas, Pallavas, Gangas, Nulambas, Hoysalas, and eventually the Bijapur emperors.
The town’s role in colonial warfare highlights its tactical value. During Mysore War I, British troops moved through Krishnagiri to attack Hyder Ali's forces at Kaveripattinam, though they were ultimately defeated there. The British seized control over Barah Mahal and Salem territories after Mysore War II concluded with the Treaty of Srirangapattinam. By 1792, Captain Alexander Reed became the first District Collector, and under Robert Clive's diplomacy, Krishnagiri was established as the headquarters of Bara Mahal.
The region's industrial and economic history is also deeply rooted in its military past; a mint was established in 1794 to forge gold, silver, and copper coins. Today, while it is known as the "Mango Capital of India," the district remains a site of significant historical preservation, housing monuments that reflect its transition from a fortified imperial stronghold to a modern administrative hub.
