From vigilante protectors to a designated global terrorist organization
In short: The La Familia Michoacana cartel didn't start as a criminal empire. It began in the 1980s as a group of vigilantes intended to bring order to Michoacán. Today, it is a designated terrorist organization responsible for trafficking tons of illicit drugs and utilizing drones to drop bombs on rivals.
The origins of La Familia Michoacana (LFM) are rooted in a complex social narrative. Mexican analysts believe the group formed in the 1980s with the stated purpose of protecting the poor and bringing order to the state of Michoacán. Initially, they operated as vigilantes, targeting kidnappers and drug dealers. However, the group eventually capitalized on this reputation, transitioning from a community-focused movement into a powerful criminal syndicate. During the 1990s, this entity transformed into a paramilitary arm of the Gulf Cartel, created to capture Michoacán's illicit narcotics market. While they initially trained with Los Zetas, the group splintered off to become an independent operation in 2006. Following the death of leader Nazario Moreno González, the organization fractured, leading to the rise of the Knights Templar Cartel and the current iteration: La Nueva Familia Michoacana (LNFM). The U.S. On 20 February 2025, the state formally classified LNFM as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist and a Foreign Terrorist Organization. Approximately 36 metric tons of methamphetamine, alongside 12 metric tons of cocaine and 12 metric tons of Mexican heroin, are transported by the group into the United States annually. Beyond drug trafficking, the cartel employs high-tech tactics, including using drones to drop bombs on rivals, and engages in kidnapping, extortion, and the illegal mining of mercury and uranium.
