From music video production to wilderness survival expert
In short: Before becoming a household name in survival television, Les Stroud navigated the music industry. The Canadian filmmaker transitioned from working behind the scenes in music videos to mastering the art of solo wilderness survival, eventually creating a television format that prioritizes authenticity over staged competition.
Les Stroud, born on 20 October 1961, is a Canadian filmmaker and survival expert best known for his series Survivorman. His career path was marked by a significant shift from the music industry to wilderness instruction. Prior to his TV fame, Stroud served as a music video production manager for acts including Corey Hart and Rush, while also performing lead guitar for New Regime, a group that joined RCA Records soon after he quit. Beyond his production work, he was a member of the David Bowie tribute group Diamond Dogs. He also previously worked as a garbage collector for the City of Toronto.
The transition to wilderness expertise began after a canoe trip in Temagami sparked a career change. In 1990, he became a guide for Black Feather Wilderness Adventures, leading excursions in Northern Ontario. This period also saw him living a Paleolithic existence for one year in the Wabakimi area of Ontario with his wife, Sue Jamison. During this time, they built structures like tipis and A-frames without using manufactured tools, relying instead on traditional foods such as moose meat, bear fat, and wild rice. He also worked as an outdoor instructor for special needs individuals of aboriginal descent in Yellowknife. Additionally, he has collaborated with chef Paul Rogalski on the PBS series Wild Harvest.
Stroud's television success was driven by his desire for authenticity. Inspired by the popularity of Survivor, he pitched a more realistic version to The Discovery Channel Canada. These 2001 specials, titled Winter in the Wilderness and One Week in the Wilderness, paved the way for the 2004 launch of Survivorman. His work has been recognized with multiple Gemini Award nominations and awards at festivals such as the Muskoka Film Festival. His series Alaska's Grizzly Gauntlet explores the social structures of Kodiak brown bears. He has also hosted episodes for the programs I Shouldn't Be Alive and Surviving Urban Disasters.
