In short: Modern warfare is shifting toward a high-volume, low-cost model. The U.S. Low-cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System represents a pivot toward mass-producible, expendable technology. By mimicking the very drones it aims to defeat, this system allows the military to overwhelm expensive air defenses using affordable, autonomous kamikaze strikes.

The LUCAS is a one-way attack drone, often called a kamikaze or suicide drone, designed to detonate upon impact. Developed by the Arizona-based firm SpektreWorks, the system was built by reverse-engineering the Iranian HESA Shahed 136. The company behind this project, SpektreWorks, was established in 2018. Before creating the LUCAS, they produced the FLM-136, which served as a training target for threat emulation. The U.S. military first unveiled the new prototypes during a Pentagon briefing in July 2025.

It measures approximately 10 feet long with an 8-foot wingspan and has an operational range of about 500 miles. By mimicking the design of the very drones it is meant to counter, the U.S. The drone was tested at the Yuma Proving Ground to ensure its capabilities. It is intended to counter low-cost drone swarms used by Russia and Iran. These systems are part of a broader effort to build thousands of autonomous weapons by July 2025.

aims to achieve mass-producibility at a fraction of the cost of traditional munitions. The economic disparity of this weapon is a core component of its strategy. A single LUCAS unit costs roughly $35,000, a stark contrast to the $2.5 million price tag of a Tomahawk Land Attack Missile. Task Force Scorpion Strike oversaw the initial Middle East rollout of the system on 3 December 2025. It was first used in a strike against Venezuelan forces on January 3, 2026, to overwhelm air defenses. The system may utilize SpaceX Starshield for its autonomous navigation. This shift follows the 2023 Replicator program and a July 2025 initiative for drone dominance.
