How a failed successor became the Luftwaffe's heavy hitter
In short: The Messerschmitt Me 210 was a flight nightmare, plagued by instability and accidents. Yet, from its wreckage emerged the Me 410 Hornisse, a powerful heavy fighter and fast bomber that briefly terrorized Allied bomber streams before being overwhelmed by superior numbers.
The Me 410's lineage is rooted in the troubled development of the Me 210. Designed in 1937 to replace the Bf 110 for various roles, the Me 210's production ended on 14 April 1942 due to frequent crashes and unstable longitudinal flight characteristics. Rather than pursuing the radical, high-altitude Me 310 design, officials opted for an incremental improvement: the Me 410.
The Hornisse achieved its performance through significant mechanical upgrades. By replacing the Me 210C's engines with larger Daimler-Benz DB 603A powerplants, each providing 1,750 metric horsepower, the Me 410 reached a maximum speed of 625 km/h. Engineers also lengthened the fuselage and introduced automatic leading edge slats to fix handling issues. These changes allowed the aircraft to carry heavy payloads, including underwing shackles for four 5/50-kilogram bombs.
Despite its power, the Me 410's effectiveness was context-dependent. It was an elusive target for RAF night fighters during missions over the British Isles, but it struggled against daylight USAAF formations once Allied single-engine fighters like the P-51 Mustang and Supermarine Spitfire provided heavy escort. While it could destroy unescorted bombers, it could not win dogfights against lighter, more agile opponents.
By mid-1944, the aircraft's role shifted. As production was phased out to prioritize single-engine fighters, the Me 410 was withdrawn from Defence of the Reich duties, leaving it to serve primarily in aerial reconnaissance. By the time production ended in August 1944, 1,160 units had been manufactured.
