In short: In 2013, Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis faced a choice that defined the limits of human courage. Armed only with a rifle and no protective gear, he stepped into the line of fire to shield a Polish officer. His actions became a symbol of an unbreakable international bond.

On August 28, 2013, Forward Operating Base Ghazni in Afghanistan came under a complex assault by 10 Taliban insurgents and a car bomber. During the chaos, Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis of the 10th Mountain Division ordered his fellow soldiers into bunkers to escape the fire. After ensuring their safety, he returned to the building to check for casualties before moving toward the breach in the base's perimeter.

Ollis located a wounded Polish officer, 2nd Lt. Karol Cierpica, who was unable to walk due to leg wounds. Together, they moved toward the point of attack without personal protective equipment. Ollis fired a three-shot rifle volley at an insurgent who rounded a corner. To protect the injured Cierpica, Ollis placed his body in front of the insurgent, ignoring his own peril. He incapacitated the insurgent, but as he approached the fallen man, the insurgent's suicide vest detonated, mortally wounding Ollis.

Ollis's heroism was initially recognized with a Silver Star, later upgraded to the Distinguished Service Cross in 2019. In 2026, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. His legacy is deeply intertwined with Poland; the Polish Defense Ministry noted his actions as a symbol of the alliance between the two nations. This bond is physical as well: Cierpica named his son Michael in Ollis's honor, and various sites in both the United States and Poland, including a training center in Bydgoszcz and a warrior grill at Camp Kościuszko, bear Ollis's name.
