In short: Most infrared-guided missiles are easily fooled by heat flares, but the Mistral was engineered to see through the noise. By combining a narrow field of view with proportional navigation, it can distinguish between a real threat and a decoy in high-stakes aerial combat.

Developed from the French SATCP system starting in 1974, the Mistral entered production in 1989. It is a multipurpose short-range air defense (SHORAD) family capable of being deployed from vehicles, ships, helicopters, or as a portable man-portable air defense system (MANPADS). The first version arrived in 1990, followed by Mistral 2 in 1998 and the advanced Mistral 3 in 2013. It is currently utilized by 37 armed forces across 25 countries.

The missile's effectiveness relies on a sophisticated all-aspect two-color cooled infrared seeker developed by SAT. To counter electronic countermeasures, the seeker features a very narrow field of view to reject interference and can tilt between +/− 38 degrees. Unlike earlier pursuit methods, Mistral uses proportional navigation with a gyro reference to defeat flares ejected from aircraft. The system is highly responsive: the missile runs up the gyro in just 2 seconds, achieving a total reaction time of 5 seconds.

Modern iterations like the Mistral Mk 3 utilize infrared imaging seekers and advanced image processing to engage low-thermal targets like UAVs and turbojet missiles. Its versatility is demonstrated through various mounts: from the manual ALAMO for light vehicles to the automated SADRAL turret, which holds six missiles and weighs 1080 kg. In recent years, production was accelerated from 20 to 40 missiles per month by late 2023 to meet urgent demands during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The system has a proven combat record, notably in 1999 when Rwandan forces used Mistral missiles to down a Zimbabwean Air Force BAE Hawk fighter. Today, it remains a cornerstone of French naval defense, being fitted to various frigates and amphibious assault ships to provide modernized protection against sea-skimming targets.
