How a single pistol shot triggered a decade of civil war on Nauru
In 1878, a wedding celebration turned into a ten-year conflict that decimated Nauru’s population. Fueled by the recent influx of firearms, the island fractured into warring northern and southern factions. The stalemate only ended when German intervention forced a total disarmament, forever altering the island's political trajectory.
The Nauruan Civil War began during a marriage festival when a verbal dispute over tradition escalated into violence. An attendee fired a pistol, killing a clan chief's son. Because Nauruan culture demanded vengeance, this single act ignited a cycle of retribution. While feuds were not new, this was the first time the conflict was amplified by the widespread availability of modern firearms, which had been introduced to the island alongside foreign spirits.
For ten years, the island remained split between northern and southern forces. By 1881, British observers reported that the population was largely intoxicated and trapped in a stalemate. By 1887, many islanders were exhausted by the fighting, yet a lack of mutual trust prevented any group from laying down their weapons first. The instability eventually threatened the commercial interests of German settlers, who had invested in local cacao plantations and agricultural enterprises, prompting German authorities to intervene.
In April 1888, Germany officially annexed Nauru. By October, the gunboat SMS Eber arrived, and German forces issued an ultimatum: surrender all weapons or face execution. The islanders complied, handing over hundreds of rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition. This intervention effectively ended the war, restored King Aweida to his throne, and brought the island under the administration of German New Guinea. The human cost was staggering; the population dropped from approximately 1,400 in 1848 to about 900 by the war's conclusion.
