In short: Formed in 1956, the National People's Army served as the primary military arm of the German Democratic Republic. Despite its reputation for rigorous discipline and training, this force never engaged in large-scale combat, eventually dissolving during the nation's reunification process and facing a complex legacy in the unified German state.

The National People's Army, or NVA, was established on March 1, 1956, evolving from the Barracked People's Police. While it adopted a distinctively German aesthetic in its ceremonies and uniforms, its organizational structure and military doctrine were heavily influenced by the Soviet Armed Forces. By 1987, the force reached its maximum strength of approximately 175,300 personnel. It was divided into four branches: the ground forces, the navy, the air force, and the border troops, the latter of which were responsible for numerous fatalities at the Berlin Wall.

Although the NVA never participated in full-scale warfare, it maintained a high state of readiness throughout the Cold War. It took part in the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia, though its two divisions were kept largely out of sight to avoid provoking local resentment. The military also provided medical support during the Soviet–Afghan War and deployed advisors to various African nations, including Angola and Mozambique. Internally, the force was deeply integrated with the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, which ensured political loyalty through intensive indoctrination and by vetting all officers.

Following the collapse of the East German state in October 1990, the NVA was disbanded. Its massive inventory of equipment and facilities was transferred to the West German Bundeswehr. The transition was difficult for former personnel; most officers and non-commissioned officers were discharged, and those who remained faced demotions. For years, service in the NVA was treated as time spent in a foreign military, resulting in minimal pension benefits for veterans. This treatment remains a point of contention, as former NVA members are prohibited from using their military ranks professionally, a restriction not applied to those who served in the Wehrmacht or Waffen-SS.
