In short: In the world of Game of Thrones, the Night King is the ultimate threat. Yet, despite his massive role on screen, this icy antagonist exists entirely within the television adaptation, having no counterpart in George R. R. Martin's original book series.

The Night King serves as the primary antagonist in the HBO adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire. While he is depicted as the first and most powerful of the White Walkers, he is an original creation for the television series. In George R. R. Martin's novels, the similar title of "Night's King" refers to a legendary 13th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch who lived generations after the Long Night and allegedly married a female White Walker. Martin has noted that the book character is a legendary figure, much like Brandon the Builder, and is unlikely to have survived to the present day.

Visually, the character is distinguished by a crown of frosty, pointy horns. To achieve his icy aesthetic, makeup artist Barrie Gower utilized practical prosthetics made of translucent rubber, supplemented by visual effects to add dimension and a blue-glowy eye hue that contact lenses could not provide. The character has been portrayed by two different actors: Richard Brake in seasons 4 and 5, and Vladimir Furdik from seasons 6 through 8.

The character's origins in the show involve a transformation triggered by the Children of the Forest, who impaled a human with a dragonglass dagger to create the first White Walker during a war with the First Men. This act of desperation turned a human into the leader of a race of monsters. His presence is marked by a chilling atmosphere, often accompanied by dropping temperatures and heavy mist, signaling a supernatural threat that defies the natural order.
