The chivalric anti-hero who was once too powerful for competitive play
In short: Meta Knight is defined by a paradox: he is a mysterious warrior bound by a strict code of honor, yet he is also a character so mechanically dominant that he was eventually banned from major tournaments to preserve the integrity of the game.
Debuting in 1993's Kirby's Adventure, Meta Knight established himself as a premier antagonist who follows a distinct chivalric code. Before engaging in combat, he famously offers his opponent a sword, proceeding with the fight regardless of their choice. While he initially served as a foil to Kirby, his role evolved into that of an antihero—a character with benign intentions who assists the protagonist when necessary for survival or the greater good of the world.
His design is steeped in mystery. He is almost always seen wearing a silver mask; however, if unmasked, he appears identical to Kirby but with a dark blue body and yellow eyes. He wields the legendary golden sword Galaxia and wears the Dimensional Cape, which can transform into bat-like wings for flight and teleportation. He also commands an army known as the Meta-Knights and owns the airship Halberd, a vessel originally intended to conquer Dream Land but later repurposed for defense.
Meta Knight's legacy is inextricably linked to his performance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. His high attack speed and versatility were so overwhelming that he became a polarizing figure in the competitive scene. At the 2012 Apex tournament, half of the top eight competitors used him, and he was three times more common than the next most-used character. This dominance led to a years-long process of polling the community and reaching a 60–40 vote to implement a ban in the United States and Canada to ensure competitive balance.
