From Frankish Margraves to Greek Lords: The Pallavicini's Medieval Expansion
In short: The Pallavicini family didn't just hold land; they shaped the borders of empires. From their roots in the House of Obertenghi, they rose to govern territories across Italy and Greece, establishing a sovereign state in Emilia while simultaneously becoming some of the most powerful figures in the Latin Empire.
The family's lineage traces back to the Frankish House of Obertenghi, who served as Margraves of Eastern Liguria starting in 951. By around 1000, their influence expanded significantly to include Milan, Tortona, and Genoa. The first known representative, Oberto il Pelavicino (died 1148), laid the foundation for a dynasty that would eventually split into two primary branches: one based in Lombardy and the other in the patrician class of the Republic of Genoa.
The family's reach was particularly notable during the Middle Ages. In 1204, following the Fourth Crusade, a branch rose to prominence within the Latin Empire. From 1204 until 1358, they ruled Bodonitsa's Margraviate, and following 1224, they emerged as Thessalonica's former Kingdom's leading dynasty. This Greek influence was maintained through complex successions; for instance, the line of Rubino inherited the throne following the death of Guy's daughter, Isabella.
The Stato Pallavicino was founded by the Lombard line within Emilia's territory, situated among Piacenza, Parma, and Cremona. Until 1587, this independent power continued to exist before being taken over by Parma's Duchy. For hundreds of years, the kin maintained political and martial importance, yielding prominent church officials, Venetian Republic General Sforza Pallavicini (a mercenary leader), plus notable modern religious scholars.
The decline of their Greek influence began after the death of Albert in 1311. However, the family's legacy is preserved through various lineages that still exist today, including a branch that settled in Austria-Hungary during the 18th century.
