From jungle expeditions to military deception: the multifaceted life of Peter Fleming
In short: Before his brother Ian created James Bond, Peter Fleming was already a celebrated adventurer. From searching for lost explorers in the Brazilian jungle to leading strategic deception in South East Asia, his life was a masterclass in high-stakes exploration and journalistic flair.
Born on 31 May 1907, Robert Peter Fleming was a British journalist and author whose life read like one of his own adventure novels. After attending Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, his professional writing journey started in 1931 as The Spectator's literary editor. His early works, such as Brazilian Adventure (1933) and One’s Company: a journey to China (1934), established him as a premier travel writer.
Fleming's thirst for exploration led him to the rivers of central Brazil in 1932. Joining an expedition to find the last known position of Colonel Percy Fawcett, he navigated internal conflicts and a race against rival groups to return to England. This journey provided the foundation for his enduringly popular travel literature.
During the Second World War, Fleming's career shifted from journalism to military service. After joining the Grenadier Guards in 1939, he served in Norway, Greece, and Burma. He eventually rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, concluding the war as the head of strategic deception in the South East Asia Command. His wartime adventures were documented in books like A Story to Tell: And Other Tales (1942) and The Flying Visit (1940).
During his final years, Fleming became a 'literary squire' residing at his Nettlebed estate. He continued to write for The Times and The Spectator—sometimes using the pseudonym Strix—and produced historical non-fiction works including Invasion 1940 (1957) and Siege at Peking (1959). While out on a Scottish shooting expedition, he passed away on 18 August 1971.
