In short: During WWII, paratroopers often landed miles from their targets due to poor navigation. To prevent such chaos, specialized "pathfinder" units were created to jump ahead of the main force, setting up radio beacons and visual guides to ensure the main body landed exactly where they were needed.

The necessity for pathfinders arose from disastrously inaccurate drops during early Allied operations. During Operation Torch in North Africa and the invasion of Sicily in July 1943, paratroopers were frequently scattered by high winds and poor navigation. In Sicily, some men landed as far as 65 miles from their intended drop zones, with some taking weeks to find Allied lines.

To solve this, specialized teams—often called "sticks"—were formed. These groups typically consisted of eight to twelve pathfinders accompanied by six bodyguards to defend them. Dropping roughly thirty minutes before the main force, they utilized tools like Eureka radar sets, colored smoke, compass beacons, and colored panels to mark the landing zones (LZs).

The 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion is credited with developing these techniques through experimentation in Oujda. While some leaders, like Major General Matthew Ridgway, initially dismissed these nonstandard concepts, the success of pathfinders at Paestum, Italy, on September 13, 1943, proved their worth. In that operation, pathfinders landed on target, allowing the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment to land in the center of the zone just fifteen minutes later.

By the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, pathfinders were essential. Despite facing intense anti-aircraft fire and low clouds that caused many misdrops, their presence helped facilitate the overall success of Operation Overlord. Interestingly, the scattering of paratroopers caused by these environmental challenges actually aided the Allies by deceiving the German High Command about the true strength of the airborne forces.
