The 1851 Platine War reshaped South America by toppling a powerful Argentine dictator.
When Juan Manuel de Rosas threatened to annex his neighbors, the Empire of Brazil orchestrated a massive regional alliance to stop him. This conflict, culminating in the decisive Battle of Caseros, ended Rosas's two-decade rule and established Brazilian hegemony, setting the stage for modern statehood in the Platine region.
By 1850, the Platine region was defined by the ambitions of Juan Manuel de Rosas, the governor of Buenos Aires. Although nominally a provincial leader, Rosas acted as a dictator over the Argentine Confederation. He sought to recreate the defunct Spanish Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata by annexing Uruguay, Paraguay, and parts of Brazil. His aggressive foreign policy, which included blockading the Paraná River and interfering in Uruguayan civil strife, posed an existential threat to the Brazilian Empire.
Brazil responded by building a sophisticated coalition. It secured defensive treaties with Paraguay and Bolivia and financed Argentine dissidents, including Justo José de Urquiza, who led the breakaway provinces of Entre Ríos and Corrientes. In 1851, Brazil formalized an alliance with these forces and the Uruguayan Colorado party. Eschewing European intervention, Brazil relied on its professional army and modern navy to project power. The Count of Caxias led 16,200 Brazilian troops into Uruguay, forcing the surrender of Rosas's ally, Manuel Oribe, in October 1851.
The conflict concluded in early 1852 with the Allied march on Buenos Aires. After defeating Argentine forces at the Battle of Alvarez Field and the Marques Bridge, the Allied 'Grand Army of South America' forced the collapse of Rosas's regime at the Battle of Caseros. While the war brought stability to Brazil and initiated a unification process for Argentina, it did not resolve all regional tensions. The aftermath saw continued internal turmoil and set the stage for subsequent international conflicts over influence and territory in the region.
