In short: As the first male consort in Danish history, Prince Henrik navigated an undefined role that left him feeling perpetually sidelined. His frustration with his status culminated in a public break from royal protocol, including a refusal to share a final resting place with Queen Margrethe II after decades of service.

Born Henri de Laborde de Monpezat in 1934, the future prince consort grew up in French Indochina and served in the French Army during the Algerian War. After marrying Princess Margrethe in 1967, he became the first male consort to a Danish monarch upon her 1972 accession. Because the role of a male consort had no historical precedent in Denmark, Henrik spent his life attempting to define his position, often clashing with the rigid expectations of the monarchy.

Henrik’s discontent was rooted in his lack of a kingly title, which he felt relegated him to a secondary status within the royal hierarchy. This tension reached a breaking point in 2002 when he left Denmark for his estate in France after feeling humiliated during a reception where his son, Frederik, acted as host. Although he eventually returned, the underlying friction persisted. In 2017, he made the controversial announcement that he would not be interred alongside the Queen, effectively breaking a burial tradition that had been established in 1559.

Beyond his royal duties, Henrik was a man of diverse interests, including poetry, winemaking, and gastronomy. He published several collections of verse and frequently showcased his culinary skills on television. Despite his public struggles with the monarchy, he remained a fixture of Danish life for nearly half a century. Following his death in 2018, he was cremated, with his ashes divided between the Danish seas and the private gardens at Fredensborg Palace, marking a final departure from the traditional royal burial practices he had long contested.
