Prince Laurent of Belgium: A Royal Life Defined by Controversy and Constitutional Change
In short: Born into the heart of the Belgian monarchy, Prince Laurent has navigated a path marked by shifting succession laws, high-profile legal scandals, and personal health struggles. From his status as a royal figure to his unique challenges with state institutions, his life offers a rare glimpse into modern European monarchy.
Born on 19 October 1963 at Belvédère Château, Prince Laurent is the youngest child of King Albert II and Queen Paola. His position in the line of succession has evolved significantly over time. While he was once third in line to the throne, a 1991 constitutional amendment granting equal succession rights to women moved him behind his sister, Princess Astrid. Today, he occupies the 15th position, while his children with Princess Claire, whom he married in 2003, follow in the 16th, 17th, and 18th spots.
The Prince has frequently found himself in the public eye for reasons beyond his royal duties. In December 2006, he was linked to a corruption scandal involving the misuse of Belgian Navy funds for renovations at his residence, Villa Clémentine. Though he testified in January 2007 that he believed the funding was legal, the incident reportedly strained his relationship with the Royal Palace. His independent streak continued in 2011 when he visited the Congo without government permission, leading to a formal agreement regarding his future activities to protect his annual appanage.
Laurent’s relationship with the state has also extended to the courtroom in recent years. In 2025, he petitioned for access to social security benefits, arguing his work for an animal welfare charity constituted self-employment. A Brussels court denied this request on 7 April 2025, ruling he fits neither the category of employee nor self-employed. These challenges occur alongside personal trials; in 2014, he was placed in a medically-induced coma while suffering from pneumonia and depression, a period during which Queen Paola publicly described him as the most vulnerable of her children.
