The Romanian princess who traded a throne for a hospital ward
In short: Born into the highest circles of European royalty, Princess Ileana of Romania chose a life of service over dynastic privilege. From organizing the Girl Guides to establishing hospitals for wounded soldiers during World War II, her journey from a royal daughter to a monastic mother reflects a profound commitment to humanitarian action.
Born in 1909 as the youngest daughter of King Ferdinand I and Queen Marie of Romania, Ileana was a member of a sprawling royal network. She was a great-granddaughter of both the Russian Emperor Alexander II and the British Queen Victoria. Despite her privileged upbringing, her mother described her as possessing an 'earnestness' and 'uncanny lucidity' from infancy. This temperament manifested early in her leadership of the Romanian Girl Guide Movement and her work establishing the first school of Social Work in Romania.
Her personal life was marked by complex royal dynamics. In 1931, she married Archduke Anton of Austria, a union encouraged by her brother, King Carol II, who sought to limit her popularity in Romania. However, the marriage faced immediate friction; Carol refused to allow the couple to live in Romania, fearing the public's reaction to a Habsburg presence. While her spouse was stationed with the Luftwaffe during the Second World War, Ileana set up a medical facility for injured Romanian troops within their Austrian castle. After returning to Romania in 1944, she founded 'The Hospital of the Queen's Heart' at Bran Castle in memory of her mother.
Following the rise of Communism, Ileana and her family were exiled, eventually settling in the United States in 1950. She spent the following decade lecturing against communism and working with the Romanian Orthodox Church. In 1961, she entered a monastery in France, eventually becoming Mother Alexandra. She founded the first English-language Orthodox monastery in North America in Pennsylvania, serving as abbess until 1981. She is remembered as the third female relative of Queen Victoria who attained the rank of Mother Superior within a convent she founded herself.
