Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark: A Royal Historian’s Life in Exile and Letters
In short: Born into the fading grandeur of European royalty, Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark navigated a life defined by displacement and historical inquiry. Orphaned young and raised by his Orleanist relatives, he traded the constraints of dynastic succession for a prolific career as a biographer, historian, and novelist of royal figures.
Born in Rome in 1939, Prince Michael was the son of Prince Christopher of Greece and Denmark and Princess Françoise d'Orléans. His early life was marked by the upheaval of World War II, which forced his family into a nomadic existence across Morocco and Spain. Following the death of his father in 1940 and his mother in 1953, Michael was raised by his uncle, the Comte de Paris, in France. This period of his life, spent within the Orléans household, provided him with a unique vantage point on the remnants of Europe's former ruling families.
Michael’s path diverged from traditional royal expectations. After studying political science in Paris and completing four years of military service in the Greek Cavalry-Tank Corps, he pursued a career as a writer. His work, which included biographies of figures like the Rani of Jhansi and Louis XIV, was noted for its meticulous research and personal anecdotes drawn from his own royal connections. His marriage to artist Marina Karella in 1965 required him to renounce his succession rights, a decision that solidified his transition from a dynastic prince to a private citizen and intellectual.
The Prince’s later years were spent in Athens, where he continued his literary output until his death on 28 July 2024 at age 85. As the last surviving grandchild of King George I of Greece and the last great-grandchild of King Christian IX of Denmark, his passing marked the end of a specific era of European lineage. His life, documented through his own historical writings and his personal experiences of exile, serves as a bridge between the vanished world of 20th-century monarchies and the modern era.
