In short: A royal claimant to a defunct throne, Philippe, Duke of Orléans, lived a life of high-stakes exile, military ambition, and polar exploration. From avoiding arrest in Paris to hunting lions in Abyssinia, his journey spanned the globe, far beyond the borders of the France he could not rule.

Born in Twickenham in 1869, Philippe was the son of the Count of Paris and lived much of his early life in the United Kingdom. His family had been living in England since the 1848 abdication of his great-grandfather, King Louis Philippe I. While he received much of his education at home and in Paris, the French Republic's decision to exile his family in 1886 interrupted his military training at Saint-Cyr, forcing him to continue his studies in Lausanne and Sandhurst.

Philippe’s life was marked by a recurring tension with French law. In February 1890, he entered Paris in violation of the 1886 law of exile. Rather than fleeing, he attempted to offer his military service to the state, only to be arrested and imprisoned at the Conciergerie. Though released after a few months, he was expelled back to Switzerland. This period of upheaval preceded his era as the Orléanist pretender, a title he held from 1894 until his death in 1926.

Beyond politics, Philippe was a prolific explorer and naturalist. He undertook several Arctic voyages, including an expedition in 1905 on the ship Belgica to explore the coast of Greenland, and later sailed the Kara Sea in 1907. His interests were vast: he engaged in hunting expeditions in Nepal and lion hunting in Abyssinia, and even served as a staff officer in India. He bequeathed zoological specimens collected during his travels in East Africa to France, leaving a scientific legacy that outlasted his political claims.
