In short: Before it was an industrial hub, Recklinghausen was a volatile center of religious strife. From being plundered by partisan armies during the Cologne War to hosting over 100 witchcraft trials, this Westphalian city served as a crucible for some of Europe's most intense medieval and early modern conflicts.

The history of Recklinghausen is deeply intertwined with the power dynamics of the Holy Roman Empire. First mentioned in 1017 as Ricoldinchuson, it became the administrative center of the surrounding Vest Recklinghausen by 1150. The city's strategic importance was solidified in 1236 when it received formal town privileges, marking its transition into a significant urban entity.

The late 16th century proved particularly turbulent for the region. This conflict was not merely a local skirmish but a major feud over religious parity within the Electorate of Cologne and broader electoral influence across the Holy Roman Empire. During this same era, the town also became a site of intense social and judicial scrutiny, hosting more than 100 witchcraft trials between 1514 and 1710.

The witch trials reached their peak twice: once during the period of 1580/81 and again in 1588/89. This era of persecution concluded with Anna Spickermann, the last person convicted of witchcraft in the city, who was sentenced to death by sword and burned after spending 16 months in prison. These events reflect a period where religious fervor and legal mechanisms collided, shaping the town's identity long before its modern industrial transformation.

The administrative landscape shifted again in the 19th century. From 1803 to 1811, Recklinghausen served as the capital of a sovereign Principality for the Dukes of Arenberg. By 1815, it became the seat of a Bürgermeisterei, eventually expanding its jurisdiction to include neighboring parishes like Herten and Erkenschwick.
