Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry: A Century of Service from the Trenches to Korea
In short: Raised in 1914 by a private citizen, this Canadian regiment became the first to reach the front lines of the First World War. Known for its fierce defensive stands, the unit has evolved from a volunteer battalion into a modern mechanized force with a storied, century-long combat legacy.
Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) was established in August 1914 through the initiative of Captain Andrew Hamilton Gault, who personally provided $100,000 to finance the unit. Named for the daughter of Canada's Governor General, the regiment was the first Canadian infantry unit to arrive in France, landing on December 21, 1914. Its early reputation was forged in the crucible of the First World War, particularly during the 1915 Battle of Frezenberg, where the unit's strength was decimated from 700 men to just 150 battle-ready soldiers while holding the line.
The regiment's operational history continued through the Second World War, where it participated in the invasion of Sicily and the liberation of the Netherlands, becoming the first Allied force to enter Amsterdam on May 7, 1945. Following the war, the regiment adapted to new global conflicts. In 1950, the 2nd Battalion was deployed to the Korean War, becoming the first Canadian infantry unit to engage in that theatre. Its performance at the Battle of Kapyong in April 1951 remains a defining moment; 700 soldiers held Hill 677 against two Chinese divisions, a critical delay that helped prevent the encirclement of United Nations forces.
Today, the PPCLI functions as a 'British-style' regiment, serving as the spiritual repository for customs and traditions across its three battalions. While the title 'Light Infantry' is an honorific chosen by Gault to evoke an irregular force, the regiment is largely mechanized, utilizing vehicles like the LAV 6.0. Headquartered at CFB Edmonton, the regiment maintains a diverse operational structure, including airborne and mountain capabilities in its 3rd Battalion, ensuring its continued relevance in modern NATO and peacekeeping operations.
