In short: Ridouan Taghi evaded the police for years by constantly altering his appearance and using false identities. Despite being linked to a massive cocaine monopoly and a string of high-profile assassinations, he remained a phantom until a 2019 arrest in Dubai revealed the scale of his criminal empire.

Taghi's criminal trajectory began in the early 1990s with the 'Bad Boys' youth gang in Utrecht. By 2009, he had effectively disappeared from the Dutch population administration, beginning a period of evasion that saw him become the most wanted criminal in the Netherlands. During this time, he was linked by Spanish police to the 2013 assassination of Mohammed Abdellaoui and was identified as a major cocaine dealer. His reach was so significant that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) identified him as a leader in one of the world's largest drug cartels, allegedly controlling roughly one-third of the total European cocaine trade.

The prosecution's case against Taghi centers on a pattern of calculated violence used to maintain dominance and silence witnesses. This included the 2015 assassination of Ronald Bakker, who was ordered by police to provide information on Taghi's organization, and the 2016 killing of Martin Kok, a crime blogger who had published details about Taghi's henchmen. The violence also targeted those who cooperated with the state; for instance, the 2017 assassination of Ranko Scekic occurred just days before he was scheduled to testify against Taghi's organization. In 2018, the murder of Reduan B. was linked to the announcement of a crown witness's testimony.

Even while held in the maximum-security Nieuw Vosseveld prison, Taghi demonstrated an ability to maintain external influence. Investigations by the Dutch police and the FBI revealed that he used bribed guards, his nephew Youssef Taghi, and even his lawyer, Inez Weski, to communicate with the outside world. These communications included discussions of breakout attempts and the coordination of criminal activities. On February 27, 2024, Taghi was finally convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in at least ten murders and the leadership of a massive criminal organization.
