A legendary California racetrack vanished, replaced by a shopping mall and suburban sprawl.
In short: Riverside International Raceway was a premier racing complex that hosted Formula One and NASCAR for over three decades. Despite its prestige, the track struggled with persistent financial instability and a high fatality rate. By 1989, the facility was demolished, leaving behind only the memory of its challenging road course.
Opened in 1957 in Moreno Valley, California, Riverside International Raceway was built by the West Coast Automotive Testing Corporation after a failed proposal in San Bernardino County. The track was designed by William L. Duquette and featured multiple layouts, including a main road course that measured 3.300 miles in its final iteration. It quickly became a hub for major racing series, hosting the United States Grand Prix in 1960 and becoming a staple for NASCAR and the Los Angeles Times Grand Prix.
Financial viability remained an elusive goal throughout the track's history. Early events, such as a 1958 Memorial Day weekend series, lost $50,000, and even successful races often failed to balance the books. Ownership changed hands frequently, moving from private investors like Rudy Cleye and John Campbell Edgar to groups led by Edwin Pauley, Bob Hope, and later, Lawrence LoPatin’s American Raceways, Inc. By 1971, the track was purchased by Fritz Duda’s Sunnymead Land Investors, who recognized the rising value of the surrounding real estate.
The track was also marked by a series of tragic accidents, particularly in the 1960s. Drivers such as Ken Miles, Joe Weatherly, and Billy Foster lost their lives on the circuit, often at the notorious ninth turn. Despite various safety renovations, including the installation of retaining walls and a redesign of the ninth turn in 1969, the facility could not escape the pressures of urban expansion. After long-time president Les Richter departed in 1983, plans for a replacement track failed to materialize. Demolition began in 1988, and the site was ultimately repurposed for a shopping district, including the Moreno Valley Mall.
