The 'Death Swallows': Morocco's Century of Elite Warfare and Peacekeeping
In short: From the 11th-century Almoravid Empire to modern UN missions, the Moroccan military has evolved into a sophisticated force of regional influence. Known by German soldiers in WWII as 'Todesschwalben' for their battlefield toughness, these troops now balance high-stakes territorial defense with global peacekeeping.
The roots of the Moroccan military are ancient, with Berber Kingdoms establishing forces as early as 225 BCE. However, the modern Moroccan army has existed continuously since 1088, coinciding with the rise of the Almoravid Empire. This lineage of service transitioned into the colonial era, where over 500,000 Moroccan troops served with Allied forces during World War II across North Africa, Italy, France, Germany, and Austria. Their reputation for tenacity was so pronounced that German soldiers nicknamed them 'Todesschwalben,' or 'death swallows.'
Following independence, the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (FAR) were officially created on May 14, 1956. A total of 140,000 French protectoral troops and 90,000 Spanish protectoral soldiers joined the new force, alongside an additional 15,000 ex-guerrillas. Since then, the military has been defined by significant regional conflicts, most notably a 16-year war against the POLISARIO movement between 1975 and 1991. To secure Western Sahara, Morocco constructed a massive sand wall staffed by an army roughly equal in size to the entire Sahrawi population.
Today, the FAR is a multi-branch force including the Army (approx. 175,000 troops), the Navy (7,800 personnel), and the Air Force (13,000 personnel). It maintains a strategic role in the Strait of Gibraltar and oversees a 280,000-square-kilometre Exclusive Economic Zone. Beyond territorial defense, Morocco is a prolific peacekeeping contributor, having deployed forces to the Congo, Angola, Somalia, Cambodia, and the former Yugoslavia. This dual identity—a fierce regional power and a reliable international peacekeeper—is anchored by the national motto: God, The Homeland, and The King.
