In short: Modern warfare is moving faster than ever, with hypersonic weapons capable of bypassing traditional defenses. Russia's S-500 Prometheus was designed to be the ultimate countermeasure—a system intended to intercept not just aircraft and missiles, but also satellites and orbital platforms at speeds up to 7 km/s.

Developed by the Almaz-Antey Air Defence Concern, the S-500 (also known as 55R6M "Triumfator-M") serves as a high-tier supplement to Russia's existing S-400 and A-235 systems. While production began in 2019, serial manufacturing faced significant hurdles due to labor shortages and international sanctions. The system is designed for extreme responsiveness, boasting a reaction time of less than 4 seconds—significantly faster than the S-400's sub-10 second threshold.

The technical specifications highlight its ambitious scope: it aims to engage up to 10 ballistic hypersonic targets simultaneously at altitudes reaching 180–200 km. Its operational range is planned at 600 km for anti-ballistic missile (ABM) roles and 500 km for general air defense. Beyond terrestrial threats, reports from 2020 suggest the system may be capable of neutralizing low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and space weapons launched from hypersonic aircraft.

Despite these capabilities, the S-500's real-world performance remains a subject of debate. While Russia claims successful testing against modern hypersonic weapons, as of 2023, specific tests for those intercepts had not been publicly verified. Furthermore, in its reported operational debut in Ukraine to defend the Kerch Bridge, the system allegedly failed to intercept Ukrainian MGM-140 ATACMS missiles. The cost of these systems has also escalated sharply, with estimates jumping from $700–$800 million in 2020 to as high as $2.5 billion by 2023.
