In short: Developed as a successor to the Scud, the Russian Iskander missile system combines high-precision guidance with the ability to carry both conventional and nuclear warheads. Its unique flight characteristics and decoy technology make it a formidable, difficult-to-intercept asset that has seen extensive use in recent regional conflicts.

The 9K720 Iskander, known to NATO as the SS-26 Stone, represents a significant evolution in Russian tactical weaponry. Design work began in December 1988 under the direction of Sergey Nepobedimy at KB Mashinostroyeniya, continuing through the dissolution of the USSR. The system was intended to replace the OTR-21 Tochka, with serial production of the Iskander-M variant officially launching in 2006. Unlike traditional ballistic missiles, the Iskander-M is controlled throughout its entire flight path, utilizing gas-dynamic and aerodynamic surfaces to maintain a flattened, unpredictable trajectory.

A defining feature of the Iskander-M is its versatility. It can be equipped with various warheads, including cluster munitions, earth-penetrating bunker busters, and electromagnetic pulse devices. The system also incorporates advanced penetration aids, such as decoys designed to confuse air defense systems—a capability that was reportedly kept as a closely guarded secret until its deployment during the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Furthermore, the missile can be re-targeted mid-flight, receiving guidance updates via encrypted radio transmission from platforms like UAVs or AWACS.

The system's operational history is marked by its use in several conflicts, including the 2008 Russo-Georgian War and the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. In the latter, the Iskander has been utilized against a wide range of high-value targets, from airbases and helicopters to sophisticated Western-supplied air defense components like the Patriot system. While the export version, the Iskander-E, is limited in range to comply with Missile Technology Control Regime restrictions, the domestic Russian variants continue to undergo modernization, with developers reporting ongoing improvements in precision and capability.
