In short: Sweden's Saab 32 Lansen was a masterpiece of Cold War engineering, but its DNA was surprisingly clandestine. To build it, Saab utilized secret technical drawings of Messerschmitt jet projects smuggled out of Switzerland by engineers who fled Germany at the end of World War II.

Development began in late 1946 as a successor to the piston-powered Saab B 18. The Swedish government required the aircraft to strike any point along Sweden's 2,000 km coastline within one hour of launch, regardless of weather or time of day. To meet this, Saab designed a twin-seat jet featuring a low-mounted wing and integrated search radar—a first for the Swedish Air Force.

The project used mathematical calculations to define outer skin curvature and joints to reduce drag, drawing on materials from Switzerland's Messerschmitt P.1101 and P.1112 projects. Project lead Frid Wänström collected these files in 1945.

Technical difficulties with the indigenous STAL Dovern engine forced a pivot to a license-built Rolls-Royce Avon powerplant. The aircraft suffered a high accident rate, with one-third of the fleet destroyed over 25 years of service.
