In short: In 1919, a workshop opened in a former Helsinki brewery to repair private weapons and recondition Russian military rifles. This humble operation eventually evolved into Sako, a premier Finnish manufacturer whose rifles now define the gold standard for precision hunting and long-range shooting.

Sako's origins are rooted in the immediate aftermath of Finland's independence from the Russian Empire. The initial facility, established in 1919, served a practical military purpose: maintaining and refurbishing existing Russian weaponry for Finnish use. By 1921, the shop achieved financial independence from the Civil Guard. It eventually relocated to Riihimäki in 1927, where it reorganized into the Sako brand during the 1930s.

The company's trajectory was defined by a transition from military utility to specialized civilian engineering. During World War II, Sako manufactured submachine gun cartridges and began exporting pistol ammunition to Sweden. However, its modern identity was forged through the development of purpose-built hunting rifles. A key milestone was the 1942 prototyping of the L42, which utilized a custom 7x33mm cartridge designed specifically for Finnish and Scandinavian game like the capercaillie.

The brand's evolution is marked by significant industrial shifts and technological leaps. In 1983, Sako absorbed the Tikka brand, and in 1986, it merged with the government-owned Valmet conglomerate to form Sako-Valmet. The Italian Beretta Holding acquired the firm in 2000, following years of government control. Technically, the brand moved from traditional hinged floorplates to radical designs like the 1997 '75' model, which introduced three symmetrical locking lugs and a detachable magazine, setting the stage for contemporary modular systems like the S20. The facility moved to an ammunition factory in Riihimäki on June 1, 1927. This transition allowed the company to expand its production capabilities. It began exporting pistol cartridges to Sweden during the 1930s.

at the end of the first paragraph in The company's ownership was split evenly between Nokia and Valmet during the 1980s. They introduced the 591 as a replacement for the L579 in 1992. These newer models featured a Tikka trigger assembly and a separate recoil lug.
