Screamo is a chaotic, hardcore-rooted subgenre that often rejects its own popular name
In short: Emerging in the early 1990s, screamo is a dissonant, emotionally charged offshoot of hardcore punk. While often confused with any music featuring screaming, the genre is defined by its brief, chaotic compositions and dynamic shifts. Many original bands even reject the label, preferring to identify simply as punk.
Screamo originated in the early 1990s, pioneered by San Diego bands like Heroin and Antioch Arrow. These groups, often associated with the 'San Diego sound,' utilized typical rock instrumentation to create a chaotic, hardcore-influenced style characterized by tension-and-release dynamics. The genre was not initially called 'screamo'; that term only emerged in the mid-1990s within the DIY hardcore scene. Many musicians, such as Chris Taylor of Pg. 99, have historically distanced themselves from the name, viewing it as a marketing tool rather than an accurate description of their artistic intent.
The genre is marked by its intellectual and theoretical influences. Early bands frequently referenced surrealist writers like Antonin Artaud and Georges Bataille, or philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche and Michel Foucault. This introspective, often political approach contrasted with the later, more mainstream 'pop screamo' or 'MTV screamo' that gained traction in the early 2000s. Bands like Thursday and the Used brought the sound to wider audiences, though this commercialized version was often criticized by the underground scene for diluting the genre's original, chaotic roots.
In response to the term's dilution, fans and artists introduced retronyms like 'skramz' to distinguish the original DIY sound. The genre has seen multiple waves of reclamation and evolution, including the 2010s 'wave' revival and the 2020s rise of 'bedroom skramz' and 'TikTok screamo.' Today, the genre remains a diverse, international movement, incorporating elements from post-rock, metalcore, and even bedroom pop, proving that despite its controversial name, the music continues to evolve through new generations of underground artists.
