The only American executed for a crime committed at age 16
In short: In 1999, the execution of Sean Sellers sparked a global debate on justice, mental health, and the law. As one of the few individuals executed for a juvenile crime since 1976, his case sits at the intersection of religious conversion and profound legal controversy.
Sean Sellers was executed by lethal injection in Oklahoma on February 4, 1999. His legal situation is unique: following the 1976 return of the death penalty, no other American has been put to death for an offence involving someone aged below 17. At the time of his crimes in 1985 and 1986, Oklahoma law did not allow juries to choose a life sentence without parole, a choice that only became available in 1987.
The crimes themselves were particularly violent. In September 1985, Sellers killed a 36-year-old convenience store clerk, Robert Paul Bower. In March 1986, he killed his 32-year-old mother, Vonda, and his 43-year-old stepfather, Paul Bellofatto. During his trial, Sellers claimed his actions were driven by Satanism and demonic possession by a demon named 'Ezurate.' While his lawyers also suggested an addiction to Dungeons & Dragons played a role, Sellers later dismissed that claim as irrational.
The legal battle surrounding his death involved complex claims of mental illness. While arguing his case before the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, judges observed that Sellers might have been afflicted by dissociative identity disorder, formerly called multiple personality disorder. Human Rights Watch condemned his execution, arguing that executing a person who was a child at the time of the crime violated international morality. However, the court ruled that the claim of insanity was raised too late in the process. His execution was ultimately upheld, marking a final chapter in a case that drew condemnation from figures as diverse as Archbishop Desmond Tutugi and the European Union.
