In short: While many associate the title 'Grenadier' with elite European heavy infantry, the first official Grenadier Regiment in the world was actually a product of the Indian subcontinent. Born from the Bombay Army, this unit broke historical precedents to become a global military first.

The lineage of the Grenadiers is rooted in the Bombay Army of the East India Company. While the British Army had its own prestigious units, the first company of native grenadiers was raised in 1759 during the Seven Years' War. This unit was composed of the best Bombay sepoys, specifically selecting those with families on the island. These native troops wore red coats with blue facings and were led by native officers. Earlier records from 1684 show a mixed company of Europeans and native Christians stationed on the Seven Islands of Bombay. By 1710, the Bombay Army expanded to five companies, including an all-European grenadier unit. This specific company was eventually merged into the Bombay European Regiment before that unit was disbanded.

A pivotal moment occurred in 1778 at the Battle of Talegaon. Because a diverse group of sepoy units' grenadier companies fought so well, the Bombay Presidency established a formal, dedicated grenadier battalion on 12 March, 1779. This was a significant milestone: it occurred thirty-six years before any British battalion was granted the honor of calling itself 'grenadiers'. The composite battalion was formed by clubbing together the grenadier companies of various Bombay sepoy battalions. This unique structure allowed them to demonstrate their prowess on the battlefield. The new permanent battalion was established specifically to recognize this impressive performance.

By November 12, 1779, the Governor General of Bombay issued an order combining grenadier companies from the Marine Battalion and other regiments to form 'The Grenadier Battalion, First Regiment of Infantry.' This established the first Grenadier Regiment in the world. The Indian Army's infantry regiments see this unit as their most decorated for Param Vir Chakras, while it also maintains the Commonwealth's longest continuous history of service. The regiment later became the 4th Bombay Grenadiers in 1922 following post-World War I reforms. It eventually transitioned to the Indian Grenadiers in 1945, severing its final ties to the Bombay Army. Today, it comprises 23 battalions and maintains a legacy of high-level gallantry awards.
